Industrial Staffing Success Story: Keeping the Assembly Line Running

In the fast-paced world of industrial manufacturing, disruptions can be costly and devastating. When a major automaker faced the imminent threat of shutting down their assembly line due to staffing challenges, they turned to Premier Staffing for an emergency solution.

Let’s take a closer look at the problem our clients face, the solution we devised, and the ultimate results we were able to achieve.

The Problem
A looming crisis for an OEM

Our client, a prominent Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), found itself  in a dire situation. Their assembly line was at risk of coming to a grinding halt due to a severe staffing shortage. Multiple local staffing companies had failed to keep up with attrition, leaving critical positions vacant. The types of labor required ranged from skilled roles like Automated Hot Stamp Operators, Maintenance Technicians, Robot Technicians, Tool & Die Experts, and MIG Welders to Material Handling, Machine Operators, Assembly Operators, Master Schedulers, and Cost Accountants. Staffing was needed across all shifts, with a particular urgency on the 2nd and 3rd shifts. To add to the internal pressure, the client was being back-charged by their customer for the disruptions caused by the labor shortage.

The Solution
Swift and strategic emergency staffing

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Premier Staffing sprang into action. We received the call on a Friday afternoon at 2 pm, and our team was on-site by Sunday. Leveraging our extensive talent pool and Subject Matter Experts, we deployed our Rapid Retention Recruiting (R3) process. This resulted in impressive outcomes. We hired 30 machine operators within 2 days, with 50 more added within one week.

Additionally, our solution resulted in:

  • 7 hot stamp operators were onboarded in 2 days, and 16 within a week
  • 15 forklift drivers joined the team within 3 days
  • 10 assembly operators were recruited within 2 days, with 15 more within a week
  • 5 maintenance technicians were brought on board in 2 days, and 9 within 5 days
  • 3 Robot technicians were added within 2 days, and 6 within 5 days.

Finally, a Master Scheduler and Cost Accountant were hired within 5 days.

We also provided a strategy to transition these contractors to a direct-hire program, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for our client. We established a continuous improvement process to capture lessons learned and optimize our recruiting methods. This included refining screening questions, improving interview scheduling, and maintaining strong associate engagement until their start date.

The Results
Rescuing the assembly line

Our efforts bore fruit, and the results speak for themselves. We rapidly staffed 100% of the desired positions with a retention rate of over 90%. Within 90 days, we replaced all emergency labor, offering the client an exit from the high costs associated with emergency staffing. New processes and procedures were implemented to streamline and enhance the quality of the recruiting and onboarding process.

Additionally, Premier Staffing established an ongoing relationship with the company, providing regular assistance with staffing needs. The company's reputation was restored, and the shipping schedule consistently met customer requirements.

The critical role of emergency staffing solutions in the industrial and manufacturing sectors can not be overemphasized. When the clock is ticking, having a partner with the expertise and resources to swiftly address industrial staffing challenges can mean the difference between operational success and costly shutdowns.
